What is the Ending veteran homelessness initiative?

The Ending Veteran Homelessness Initiative is a national strategy funded by the Government of Canada aimed at ensuring Veterans have access to safe and stable housing.

In Waterloo Region, the Initiative is facilitated by Cambridge Shelter Corporation and Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services.

The Initiative works to actively identify Veterans without access to safe and stable housing, matching them with available housing, and providing financial and support services to ensure no Veteran is left behind.

How this program helps Veterans

We match Veterans with long-term affordable housing, and connect you with supports and services that understand your unique needs.

Process

  1. Everything begins with a point of connection. Reach out to us using the form below, or by email, phone, or text. Our Outreach Worker or Housing Support and Housing Liaison will answer all of your questions and guide you through the next steps.

  2. We'll collect basic information from you to better understand your needs and allow us to find an appropriate housing match and link you with other local services and resources relevant to your situation.

  3. We'll develop a personalized wrap-around support plan which will continue after you're housed, with frequent check-ins to ensure your community, housing, and service needs are being met.

  4. We believe in maintaining informed consent throughout the process. We'll review every form with you, and answer any questions, before taking any action - including the process to verify your Veteran status.

  5. When we identify a housing match for you, we'll review the lease and other relevant information with you. Your lease will be with Porchlight, who will maintain a relationship with the property owner on your behalf.

  6. Porchlight will continue to support you, ensuring your new home is a long-term place to live.

How you can help Veterans in our community

Partnering with the Ending Veterans Homelessness Initiative (EVHI) allows property owners to actively address some of the systemic barriers to our neighbours being able to access affordable housing, contributing to a more equitable and compassionate community.

Security and Stability,

As a Property Owner, you’ll lease directly to Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services, who will act as the landlord of your unit(s). This will ensure financial reliability with guaranteed monthly rent, utility, and liability payments, providing an added layer of security.

We understand that everyone’s needs evolve over time. That’s why our offer flexibility, allowing property owners to transition out of the partnership if their circumstances change, without the complexities often associated with traditional landlord-tenant relationships.

Property Owner Support

We recognize that providing housing is a partnership. That’s why we offer comprehensive Property Ownership support, including assistance with damage funds to cover unexpected repair needs. Some Veterans in our program bring valuable property maintenance and trade skills, which could be leveraged at your discretion to support regular upkeep. As a Property Owner, you may also benefit from additional government funding opportunities, including Veterans Affairs Grants, that would enhance accessibility and your unit’s value.

Through the EVHI, you can enjoy a rental experience that doesn't require direct management of tenant interactions and the elimination of some of the common risks and concerns associated with rental income.
