Warming Centre
The number of people currently experiencing homelessness in Waterloo Region is unprecedented. Like most communities across Canada, we are in a housing crisis.
In response to urgent needs and after an extensive search for space, the Region and Porchlight will be opening an overnight warming centre at Wesley United Church, located at 6 Cambridge Street, Cambridge. This location will initially be open to women (female-identifying and gender diverse individuals).
Cambridge has been without a women's shelter since 2019. A new women's shelter, operated by the YWCA, is planned but is not yet open - leaving a service gap within the community. In order to fill this gap, this warming centre will initially be open to women (female-identifying and gender diverse individuals) only. This decision will be reassessed when an alternate shelter for women opens - in the interim, The Bridges at 26 Simcoe St. remains an option for those unable to use this centre.
Porchlight provides a safe space where counselling and addictions services support the emotional well-being of people in Cambridge and North Dumfries.
